SUCCESS STORY
An optimal partnership
In 2022 Cleanaway partnered with Optimal Site Performance to deliver our inaugural Women’s Waste Operator Training Academy.
Modelled on our Women’s Driver Academy, the Waste Operator Training Academy aimed to train women with no previous operating or waste management experience as equipment operators.
The new program was required to encompass not only a diverse range of ‘yellow gear’ including landfill compactors, dozers, front-end loaders, excavators, and articulated trucks but also the unique and highly specialised operational requirements of our post-collection sites including the Melbourne Regional Landfill which is the biggest landfill in the southern hemisphere. The development of safety-focused and equipment-friendly operators were critical as reflected in the KPIs for the program which included no lost time incidents (LTI), no machine damage, and no accidents in the first 3 months.
To meet these demanding and unique requirements we engaged Optimal Site Performance (OSP) to develop and deliver a tailor-made 12-week program. Implemented from August 2022 to November 2022, OSP rose to the challenge and delivered a program that not only met our needs but also seamlessly fitted into our demanding operational requirements. They also met a range of challenges including one of the wettest periods on record. OSP delivered more the 2,400 hours of training which included more than 550 hours of practical experience in real working conditions. The five women who successfully completed the program achieved a total of 31 RII national competencies.
The graduates have now been integrated into our workforce and are working on the front line of our operations. Due to the comprehensive nature of the training which included equipment from a mix of manufacturers, the graduates have the skills to be flexible enough to self-learn, and the confidence to push themselves while staying safe. To ensure ongoing success OSP continues to provide ongoing support to ensure the new operators continue to develop and meet the high standards that have been set.
At the request of our current operators, we are now looking at extending key aspects of the training to our existing team as they have seen the level of knowledge and skills that the graduates have gained and the benefits it brings to their work. We look forward to continuing to work with OSP and utilizing their expertise to further develop and deliver training and operational programs.

LEARNING SUCCESS
Women’s operator academy
The women’s operator academy was such an amazing experience. I gained so much experience all while making great friends. As a single mum I was able to prove to my kids you can do anything and it’s all thanks to this amazing course, trainers and Cleanaway.
Ashley R – New Cleanaway Operator
I personally found the women’s operator academy great. I completed the 12 week course and have managed to gather 8 competencies from it. Without getting trained by Rob I wouldn’t have been able to do it, his support played a massive part for me which is why I succeeded. I couldn’t thank Rob enough.
